James Thompson is the Head Instructor of the Okinawan Karate Academy.
Sensei Thompson has had over 45 years experience in the martial arts and currently holds the rank of Kyoshi Hachidan, Eighth Degree Black Belt. He has received his Master Instructor certificate from the Grand Master of the system, Kanei Uechi. Not only has Sensei Thompson become proficient in Uechi Ryu Karate, he has also trained in Okinawan Kobudo, Aikido, Judo, Tang Soo Do, and other Asian martial arts.
Sensei Thompson began his training in the Army when he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He served four tours of duty in Special Forces in Vietnam and taught hand-to-hand combat and survival techniques to Green Berets in the 1960's and 1970's. Mr. Thompson has spent 10 years in Okinawa, which exposed him to some of the best martial artists in the world today. He has also been involved in anti-terrorist training and other government special operations units.
Sensei Thompson is aided in the running of his school by his wife, Hideko Thompson. She holds the rank of Godan, Fifth Degree black belt.
The Thompsons believe that all people can benefit from Karate training. He has taught people of all ages, from children to senior citizens and people of all physical conditions. The style of teaching emphasizes patience and respect for the individual, while maintaining a realistic approach to self defense and traditional Uechi-Ryu Karate Do.
