What are dust mites and where do they live?
Your house is the native habitat of the dust mite - a microscopic spider-like organism whose exological niche is to consume human skin scales and pet dander. Humans loose about 30 grams of skin per month. (Want proof? Just rub your arm in a beam of sunlight.... those particles you see floating in the air are small flakes of dead skin.) As the dust mite digests this high protein meal, it excretes 10-20 fecal pellets each day. These mite droppings contain powerful allergens that cause allergic reactions, en the family dog can suffer skin conditions as a result of mite allergens.

The most heavily infested areas are the mattress, pillows, and carpet around the bed. Even the "teddy bear" a child sleeps with and cuddles at night is a favored habitat for the dust mite - also that over-stuffed chair or couch and the rec-room carpet you lay on to watch TV. Dust mites are prolific breeders, a female laying around 300 eggs during her 2-3 month lifespan. A typical double mattress holds as many as two million of the unseen and troublesome critters and that nice soft pillow you lay your head on every night may contain as much as 20% of its weight in dust mite and feces.

Carpet manufacturers are almost unanimous. The best way is to use hot-water extraction, also called steam cleaning. Shaw Industries, for example, which is the world's largest carpet manufacturer, recommends only hot-water extraction.

Steam Cleaning Carpet:
It is actually hot-water extraction, but it steams a lot. It is also the best way to clean carpet. A good hot-water extraction unit forces very hot water into the carpet pressurised between 120 and 150 lbs. pressure, and then sucks it (and the dirt) out thoroughly. "Steam cleaning," as it is commonly called, has the following advantages:

- The high heat kills bacteria, fungus, mold, and dust mites, making it the healthiest way to clean carpet.

- It doesn't leave residue, if it's done correctly. Detergent residues attract dirt, which can damage carpet.

- Themoderate pressure cleans carpet more deeply without ov- erwetting.

- The strong vacuum also cleans carpet more deeply.
- Heat really helps! Above 118 degrees fahrenheit, every 18 degrees higher changes chemical reactivity by 100%. Hot water extraction cleaning is done between 150 and180 degrees. Is that too technical? The bottom line is that it's just the best way to clean carpet.

* House dust mites are present in more than 90% of American homes.

* A gram of house dust (approximately half of a teaspoon) contains as many as 1,000 dust mites. That same gram of dust holds 250,000 of their fecal pellets.

* Dust mites are equipped with sticky pads on the end of their feet so they are able to burrow deep in carpet fibers and furniture where they resist normal vacuuming.
