12:20PM Wednesday - The fiber cut causing the outage has been fixed - all inbound and outbound telephone calls should be working!
Tuesday, 7:00PM - There is a major AT&T outage in the Upper Peninsula. The end result for Baraga Telephone customers is people from outside the area cannot call long distance in to Baraga Telephone customers but Baraga Telephone customers can call long distance out.
Other AT&T and or cell phone services may be affected as well. We will post new information as it becomes available.

Comet Hartley 2 is approaching and should be brightest on October 20. This is a faint comet so patience and a pair of good binoculars will be a virtue. Sky and Telescope has good sky maps showing where to look. If you are lucky and have dark enough skies you may be able to see the comet with your naked eye!
Thank goodness light pollution (light pollution?) (yes, light pollution) is at a relative minimum in the Upper Peninsula and we still have skies dark enough to see the night sky. Light pollution is caused by using an inefficient design such as a globe which wastes 1/2 of the light and energy and cost straight up into the night sky. Light pollution is also caused by inappropriate use of lights, such as needless or poorly aimed lights.
Hopefully we can keep our skies dark enough so our children can be awed by the wonders of comets and meteors!

If a comet isn't enough action the Orionid Meteor Shower will start to heat up Oct 17 - 25 with a peak Oct 21 and Oct 22. The full moon is going to wash out some of the meteors, but the meteors should still put on a show!

It's fall, the leaves are changing colors and are, sadly, about to drop from the trees. The above photo (warning: 5Mb link) was taken at the top of Mt. Bohemia on Oct 3 and shows the state of color affairs in the Keweenaw. For reference: Lac La Belle is in the foreground with Deer Lake just behind. On the right in the distance is Gratiot Lake, and on the left in the distance is Lake Superior. And just visible in the foreground are a couple of yurts!
Time is short to see the colors this year, enjoy them while they last. As Camus said, "Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower."
