06/01/2010: Tobacco Free Michigan Newsletter June 2010

The May issue of the Tobacco-Free Michigan Newsletter is enclosed for your information and review. Clearly, the May 1 implementation of the Ron Davis Smoke-Free Air law is the culmination of a momentous public health policy achievement. Because of the tremendous effort and collaboration between the Department of Community Health and the Department of Agriculture, public awareness and compliance with the law – both by businesses (including restaurants and bars) and individuals has been smooth and largely unremarkable. The implementation experience has confirmed that widespread education and clear communication about expectations quickly eliminates confusion and enhances compliance. The number of complaints regarding violations is much lower than anticipated by either department.
In addition to implementation of the new smoke-free air law, the newsletter includes other Michigan news: 1) a brief synopsis of the address by Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, in his speech to the University of Michigan, School of Public Health graduating class; and 2) collaboration successes between the tobacco and diabetes programs at the Michigan Department of Community Health.
Finally, in national news, there is an article updating the new protections put in place by the FDA through the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Please familiarize yourself with this important public health information. You will soon notice – among other things, that cigarette packs and smokeless tobacco will no longer use such claims on their labels as ‘lite’ or ‘low’ or ‘mild’, and you will notice much larger warning labels on smokeless tobacco packages.
We hope this brief newsletter will enhance your knowledge and understanding of the important activities about tobacco prevention initiatives that positively impact our great state.
