High Winds Caused Extensive Outages Cloverland Wraps-Up Restoration Efforts
November 1, 2010—Cloverland Electric Cooperative reports power was restored on Sunday following the two-day wind storm that tore through the area last week. More than 20 broken poles were identified in addition to the many spans of downed power lines. At the height of the storm about 15,000 members were without power. Crews continue to work Monday on a few scattered outages at seasonal cabins and camps throughout the area.
Line crews worked 16-hour shifts to keep pace with restoration efforts and reduce outage times for members. The hardest hit areas were located along the US 2 corridor and nearby communities of Moran, Brevort, Curtis, Manistique Lakes, Naubinway and Engadine.
While the winds diminished by Friday, trees that were loosened because of the storm continued to fall onto the power lines. “At one point, we had the lines coming down almost as fast as we were putting them up,” stated Manager of Operations and Engineering Ernie Maas.
Many electric utilities across the Upper Peninsula were hit hard by the event. “Typically, we are able to call in crews from neighboring utilities for help, but this time everyone was in the same boat,” added Maas.
Cloverland lines crews and office staff worked extended hours throughout the event. Many employees were reassigned duties to help with restoration efforts in the field. ”We had response teams traveling ahead of the crews identifying broken poles, trees on lines and other safety-critical problems,” stated General Manager Dan Dasho.
