The Midland Academy is K-12 college-preparatory charter school serving students in the Great Lakes Bay Region. The Midland Academy experience is unique. The Academy program is designed to be rigorous, yet sufficiently diverse to be balanced by community activities. The three foundational pillars of focus include advanced academics, character education and parental involvement.
The Midland Academy invited fourteen 9th through 12th grade students to participate in a leadership and communication retreat. The purpose of Camp CALL Communication Action Leadership and Learning is to promote understanding among all student groups and to train students to become more effective leaders. Students were challenged to develop and improve their problem solving skills, communication and listening skills, helping skills, and their peer relationships. The benefits that might be expected from this experience include fostering a positive school climate and empowering students to take ownership of their learning experience. Participants were nominated by Midland Academy staff and selected by the Camp CALL committee.
Part of the benefit of this experience lies in empowering students to take ownership of change and creating an open dialogue amongst staff, administration, and students. Students participated in LOW COPE activities which are a series of both physical and mental challenges to build a higher level of trust and teamwork within the group. The physical portion of it consists of courses out in the woods that challenge the students to work together using both verbal and non verbal skills to complete a task. The mental portion includes riddle type exercises done either on a one by one basis or where the group can work together. Participants individually benefited from intensive communication training and develop positive peer and teacher-student relationships, and improved problem solving skills. Camp CALL channels existing research on assets completed by the Search Institute to meet specific school needs and was designed to enhance the asset categories of support, boundaries and expectations, commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies, and positive identity. By increasing assets, building communication and leadership skills, and empowering students to take ownership of their own learning experience, Camp CALL plays a powerful role in positively constructing school culture and fostering an atmosphere for learning.
Students who attended 2010 Camp CALL were: Jessica Adams, Jessica Eurich, Hannah House, Caitlyn Kindy, Amanda Severs, Cassie Stankiewicz, Isaac Potts, Erik Breidinger, Cullen Chambers, Nathan Dilas, Zachary French, Colin Mealey, Collin Shooltz, and Joshua Singer.
