The Neighborhood Investment Corporation was formed September 1992 by a coalition of nonprofit housing developers, local government leaders, and area banks and lending institutions.
The mission of the Neighborhood Investment Corporation is to revitalize low and moderate income areas of Muskegon through support, development, and financing of affordable housing and economic opportunities.
To accomplish this mission Neighborhood Investment Corporation works with lending institutions, government agencies, and community residents to develop housing and economic development opportunities for persons of low and moderate income.
The core value of the Neighborhood economic development is the creation and retention of wealth. Neighborhood Investment Corporation sees its role as a bridge between the public and private economies. As a nonprofit community based corporation we can access public dollars to use as incentives for individuals who want to invest in neighborhoods and act as risk buffers for banks and corporations. We can also educate both the consumers and the providers on how to build profitable partnerships. As neighborhood economies develop and are able to operate fully and unsubsidized, our role diminishes.
Neighborhood Investment Corporation is a private, nonprofit organization governed by a Board of Directors. Our Board of Directors is composed of members from many sectors in the community; community based organizations, banks and businesses, local government, and neighborhood associations.
Neighborhood Investment Corporation was incorporated in the State of Michigan as a nonprofit corporation in 1992. We received 501(c)(3) tax exemption status from the Internal Revenue Service the following year. In 1997, both the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the City of Muskegon recognized us as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO). We are also a Community Development Entity (CDE).
